Tattoo Removal Laser Price: Q-Switched vs Pico
Updated 18 October 2026
There is no single published price for a tattoo removal laser in Ireland. Q-switched nanosecond machines and picosecond machines sit in different price tiers, and manufacturers generally quote on request. We do not have a researched tattoo removal machine on our own pages, so this guide explains what drives the price and what you can safely compare, rather than quoting figures we cannot support.
Key takeaways
- There is no single published price for a clinical tattoo removal laser; manufacturers generally quote on request, and we have no researched tattoo machine in our own data.
- Picosecond machines sit in a higher price tier than Q-switched nanosecond machines, and one picosecond-only clinic describes nanosecond treatment as the less expensive option.
- Astanza says more wavelengths generally means a higher price, with its Duality at 1064 and 532 nm and its Trinity adding 694 nm.
- Overseas wholesalers list portable Q-switched units at a few hundred dollars FOB, which excludes shipping, duties, service and compliance and is not comparable to a clinical system.
- In Northern Ireland laser clinics including tattoo removal must register with RQIA; for the Republic, check with the HPRA and your insurer.
What is the difference between Q-switched and picosecond tattoo removal lasers?
Tattoo removal works by breaking ink into fragments using very short pulses, and the pulse length defines the machine class.
| Q-switched (nanosecond) | Picosecond | |
|---|---|---|
| Pulse length | Nanoseconds | Picoseconds |
| Typical wavelengths | 1064nm and 532nm, sometimes 694nm or 755nm | Usually several wavelengths |
| Capital cost | Lower tier | Higher tier |
| Treatment speed | Established, many sessions | Marketed as fewer sessions, which varies by tattoo |
Astanza, a US tattoo-removal specialist, describes its Duality as a Q-switched Nd:YAG with 1064nm and 532nm and its Trinity as adding 694nm to give three wavelengths, and notes that more wavelengths generally means a higher price. Its pricing page does not publish a figure and asks you to make contact. That is typical of the category.
What could we verify about tattoo removal laser prices?
We searched for model-level prices and found mostly vendor marketing and low-quality listings. Two real observations came out of it:
- Clinical machine prices are not published. If a figure is not on the manufacturer's site, it is whatever a distributor quotes you, which will include training, warranty and delivery.
- Very cheap units exist. Overseas wholesalers list portable Q-switched units at a few hundred dollars FOB, before shipping, duties, service or compliance. We would not treat those as comparable to a clinical system, and we cannot say what energy output or safety features such units actually have.
For anything between those extremes, ask for written quotes from at least two distributors and compare what is included.
What drives the price of a tattoo removal laser?
- Technology class. Picosecond platforms are positioned above nanosecond ones.
- Wavelengths. Treating a wider range of ink colours needs more wavelengths or handpieces, and each costs more.
- Brand and service. An established brand with an Irish or UK engineer is worth more at resale and easier to keep running.
- Condition and use. On a used unit, ask about the shot count, the flashlamp or laser source, and the articulated arm or fibre.
- Training and warranty. Ask what is included and whether it transfers.
How do you work out the cost of owning a tattoo removal laser?
Because we cannot give a machine price, here is the structure rather than numbers. Add up the purchase price, a service contract, consumables and replacement parts, insurance, laser safety advice and staff training. Divide by the number of sessions you realistically expect over three years. That gives you a cost per session, which you can compare with what you plan to charge.
A big practical point: tattoo removal needs repeat sessions, so patient retention and booking flow matter as much as the machine. Many clinics also use a multi-application platform with an Nd:YAG module for pigment work. For example, our figures list the Lumenis M22 at €60,000 new and €12,000 to €30,000 used, and the Stellar M22 at €90,000 new, though those are multi-application IPL and laser platforms, not dedicated tattoo removal machines, so check that the specific configuration is suitable.
What regulation and safety rules apply?
Requirements for laser clinics differ between Northern Ireland and the Republic. In Northern Ireland, a laser safety consultancy notes that laser clinics including tattoo removal must register with RQIA, with a laser protection adviser and an expert medical practitioner. We could not verify the equivalent position in the Republic of Ireland, so check with the HPRA and your insurer before you buy.
Where can you buy or sell a tattoo removal laser?
Looking for a tattoo or skin laser? Browse the skin lasers category and live listings at /classifieds. If you are upgrading from a Q-switched unit, you can list it free, no commission, and our sell page explains how. See also how to price your used machine and how to buy a used laser for an inspection checklist. For another skin-laser comparison, read the CO2 laser price guide.
Prices vary widely, so get written quotes from distributors and inspect any used unit before you buy.
Sources and notes
- Ray Studios for pulse lengths, ink colours and relative cost. The clinic uses only picosecond lasers, so it has a commercial interest and gives no session counts.
- Astanza technology and Astanza pricing for wavelengths and the absence of a published price.
- Beautetrade listing for the budget import price level.
- Lasermet for Northern Ireland RQIA registration, a laser protection adviser and an expert medical practitioner.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a tattoo removal laser cost?
Clinical-grade prices are not published and are quoted by distributors on request. Cheap imports exist but are not comparable to clinical systems.
How does a tattoo removal laser work?
Very short pulses break the ink into smaller fragments; nanosecond lasers pulse at about a billionth of a second and picosecond lasers at about a trillionth (Ray Studios). That page is from a picosecond-only clinic, so read its comparisons with that in mind.
Is a picosecond laser better than Q-switched?
Picosecond machines are positioned as better on coloured inks and needing fewer sessions, but results depend on ink, skin and operator skill, and the source we opened gave no session counts. They are usually in a higher price tier.
How many wavelengths does a tattoo removal laser need?
More wavelengths treat more ink colours but cost more. Astanza describes its Duality as 1064 and 532 nm and its Trinity as adding 694 nm (Astanza).
Can I buy a used tattoo removal laser?
Yes. Ask about shot count, the flashlamp or laser source, the articulated arm or fibre and service records, and test it before paying.
Can I use a multi-application platform like the M22 for tattoo removal?
Some clinics use an Nd:YAG module for pigment work, but our machine pages list the Lumenis M22 and Stellar M22 as multi-application platforms, not dedicated tattoo machines. Confirm with Lumenis that your configuration suits the indication.
Do I need a licence to remove tattoos with a laser?
Rules differ by jurisdiction. In Northern Ireland, registration with RQIA applies (Lasermet). For the Republic, check with the HPRA and your insurer.
